Easley: Won't 'grind my heel' in immigrants' faces

Gov. Mike Easley says it’s in the state’s interests to allow undocumented immigrants to attend community colleges if they qualify and if they pay out-of-state tuition. That essentially puts him in accord with a new community college system policy – and in opposition to both Democrats and Republicans running for governor to replace him. In a phone interview this morning, here’s what Easley said:

“Here’s my position. The people we are talking about were brought here as babies and young children through no fault of their own. They distinguished themselves throughout our K-12 (public school) system. Now, I’m not willing to grind my heel in their faces and slam the door on them. The Community College System has to be open to them in order for them to be productive members of our society and help North Carolina and America compete in the world economy.”

That’s contrary to what candidates for governor are saying. “That doesn’t surprise me,” Easley said, “but I think both the Democrats and the Republicans, if they are elected governor, will revisit this issue and will view it through a totally different lens. Because if they set a policy that is destined to build a weaker North Carolina, then they will reap the [consequences] of that.”

Denying illegal immigrants access to community colleges “doesn’t penalize the immigrants, it penalizes this state and innocent children."

Easley says this problem exists because of Congress’ failure to deal honestly with immigration problems, including sealing the borders and reforming immigration policy, “so the citizens of North Carolina don’t have to make these agonizing decisions that are creating a lot of hate and anger.”

Easley says he knows his view runs contrary to that of many North Carolinians. “It’s going to be a hell of a Christmas,” he noted. “Everybody in the world is going to be picketing the mansion.”

That's the type of governor you've always been Sleasley. You have made so many bad decisions that one more won't hurt. Thanks for slowing down the belt loop around Charlotte too. It's much more important to have one in Wilmington I guess. Heck, we're only the number two city in the United States for banking. You and your colleagues have such a jealousy for our city that you put four lane roads in the middle of fields but fail to lessen our traffic congestion. How many loops are in Raleigh? It's smaller than Charlotte but right where the snotty nose politicians are located. I'll be glad to see you gone and I hope the illegal aliens get to go with you.

I expect no better from that laughingstock of a governor. It's not bad enough that he and his compatriots are crooks when it comes to state finances?!?!? How this sap ever reached office is beyond me. he has betrayed the citizens of NC time and time again.

Should Charlotte form its own state? At least, we could get roads built and light bulbs replaced on our own.

Easley is a pandering ho!

easley is an immoral, unintelligent person all the way around.
the crime of illegal immigration will continue to cost working people the higher wages that would have been theirs were not the labor force artifically inflated by criminals who have broken the law to be here.
meanwhile, supporters of ilegal immigration will continue to tell their perverted lies that people who oppose this crime are motivated by hate.

Fact:

Wake, Orange and Durham Counties are larger than Charlotte. They need the roads too, if not worse than we do.

Fact: NC has the second largest road network in the country (thank you Kerr Scott) so maintenance is, you know, a little expensive. And believe it or not, Charlotte is not the most important thing in the state (and for a reason why the rest of the state hates you, re-read your post...)

So do some homework Steve.

As for Easley's opinion...imagine that, a politician taking an unpopular stand because it's the right thing to do. Nicely done Mike.

Why dont you folks ask the Feds and Bush why we're in this mess with immigration and get them to enforce the laws? Oh...that's right we're too busy enforing law in Bagdad!

The colleges accept almost no one under these rules...it's too expensive for them. What do you expect these young people to do? Most of them were born here and have already been to K-12. I guess educating them and trying to bring them into prodcutive society doesn't sound like a good idea to you.

I know you'll say "send them back." But to where? And how will you pay for that since none of you want to pay enough taxes to fund all your needs anyway?

Then perhaps you can tell me why Easley and his cronies raided the NC Highway Trust Fund (again) for over $170 million in order to balance the State budget. Seems that if road repair is soooo expensive and we have soooo many roads the Tax Hike Mike might not wat to rob the citizens of those funds.

danimal's lies are typical of the people who embrace the crime of illegal immigration. to the liberals who have a sick, twisted obsesssion with race, everything is about race. the rest of us don't care about that.

Mike Easley is too big of a mama's boy to grind his heel in anybody's face!

He was only elected because he's passive aggressive and he hides his devious, cut throat tarheel mafia's real intentions.

As a matter of fact, I think John Edwards is kinda wimpy too.

Danimal has always played the race card in his posts. Fortunately he gets as little traction on that ground as on any other. His accusations of hatred leveled against those who hold to conservative values is interesting given his unimaginative and childish rants.

"Mama's boy"? "Wimpy"? Go back to the playground and steal kids' lunch money and stay out of policy debates.

Speeding, littering and drinking under age are all illegal. Somehow I imagine you and your ilk don't really care about enforcing those laws...

Here's not callled "Mike Sleazely" for nothing. In my opinion, our state doesn't have a governor or a state legislature for that matter...they are worse than a bunch of prostitutes!

Good for Governor Easley.

It's awfully easy to pander to the likes of most commenters here, to offer simple-minded knee-jerk reactions to complicated problems.

Easley got this one right.

Catholic101 said...

Complicated problems, James? Complicated to you, maybe!

Let me show you --

Illegal immigrant? Yes? Arrest. Convict. Deport.

What was so difficult?

By the way, the Governor is supposed to work for the people of the State, not the other way around. He is supposed to "pander" to the people, not us to him.

Who are you kidding danbo? Those who hold 'conservative values' are the most childish of all. Listen to WBT or Fox News if you don't believe me. I'll be laughing my a$$ off when your kids start dating Latinos and we see what you're really made of.

FUBAR

Its the same old tactic the libs always use..."its for the children" blah blah blah

The children, in many cases, are just as illegal as their law breaking parents...send them home!

it is seemingly more and more obvsious, that we(the united states) are going to hold the hand of law breakers. What the politicians are great at.... All of these people are breaking the law.... Why should we pay more $$ for them? We all come from immigrants, why are we sissyfiying the latin immigrnats. The italians, the irish, and im pretty sure the african (will call em` immigrants for the sake of arguments) had more of a plight then these MARTHA STEWART immigrants. We handing them everything. I believe the onely ones who have a right to comlain now are those who arte trying to get out of YOU BROKEN COUNTRY.......

I don't understand what all the fuss is about. If the governer of our state says that these kids where born here, then they are not illegal so, they should not have any problems getting into the community colleges. Is it because they can't produce the proper paper work? What does it take for a natural citizen of the United States to get the paper work needed? Last time I checked, all you need to get into a commumity college is a birth certificate, a social security card and your high school transcrips.
Now, if they are illegal, then they should not be allowed to even apply.
I'm starting to get a little upset with all of the finger pointing going on out there about the illegal alien issue and who's fault it is. If you want to point a finger point it at yourself. We are all to blame for the problem. We complain about the prices of products and refuse to pay the fare price of what something is worth and forget that the highest cost of any product is the labor it takes to produce it. That's why companies hire illegals, to cut thier cost so they can feed thier own familes.
And for those of you that think that everything is about race, GET A GRIP.
If we really want to fix the problem, then we need to start at the bottom and work our way up.
As for Mike Easley, I don't want to give my opinion on how I feel about him, but he is not doing anything different than the rest of our polititains are doing. He's pandering to one group at a time and then changing his stance as he goes.

Bravo, Gov. Easley! And don't let the comments from the loons to disuade you. We need common sense solutions to this problem of immigration, not just demogogic rhetoric.

Be Wary of the new breed of banker backed politicians. They have no love for the common citizen. Yet they will send the "Heel Dogs" to hound you if you try to interfere with the cash flow.

What a joke of a public servant and of a man.

Finally, a voice of Sanity,Courage and Justice, Bigotry is an easy sale, Hitler,Lester Maddox and many other politican have used this tool. The hard working undocumented workers are an easy target for these demoagogues as they have no voice to respond. The undocumented did not send the textile or furniture industry to China or start the Iraq war, However many did serve and die in this war. A 10% truth is more effective than an out right lie in waging hate. If Walmart, Lowes, Exxon, and other Corporation can cross the border for finacial gain for share holdes how is an Mexican family different. Lets hope for more justice and sanity. Lonnie

I highly commend Governor Easley for his public support of the initiative to allow undocumented immigrants to attend community colleges in North Carolina.

Consider this: many of the undocumented immigrants in North Carolina are children who were brought to this country at a young age, without any say in the matter, or immigrants who are in the process of having their documentation straightened out. Why should they suffer at the hands of a broken system? They deserve every opportunity to succeed and learn English.

Furthermore, these students will not receive any federal grants or financial aid, they will be paying for their education entirely on their own, and at an amount nearly double that of what most local students will be paying, as they are required to pay tuition as "out-of-state" students. The system is actually making money off of these students, which can only increase the quality of the education offered at these colleges.

I can only hope that the more people in this state, such as our Senators, will take note of Easely's actions, and the positive example he has set for all legislators in our state.

I commend Gov Easley for taking a stand on the education issues facing immigrant children. This is a move in the right direction. Let’s keep working towards reasonable and workable solutions.

I was born and raised in N.C. but now live elsewhere. I still have strong roots there. Governor Easley seems to be ahead of his time. He is showing a tolerance of the unfortunate in difficult situations akin to Gov. Sanford in the 60s. The people of NC need to follow his lead and get away from strict conservative stances.

Thank you Governor Easley for taking a stand and supporting the education of ALL students in NC. I commend you for swimming against the current of ignorance and for not caving in under the overwhelming pressure of some people, whom for the most part, are just getting over issues of segragation. Wake up, we are in the 21st century. My beautiful country, the U.S.A., originated with immigrants & I thank God everyday for the privilege of having been born here. I thank God for the umbrella of protection the Bill of Rights gives me & everyone else.

All this hate & bigotry will only continue birthing hate & bigotry. Think of what you're teaching your children & how they in turn, will treat you.

Signed,

A Hispanic-American, proud to be an American; a U.S. American by birth & South American by heritage.
Tolerance is a good thing.

It amazes me how so many people think that deporting millions of people back to Mexico and Central America is both possible and in our economic best interest. The comments here strengthen my conviction that most Americans are illiterate and want a simple yes or no, black and white answer to complex issues. Yes, sending them all back to where they came from is the black and white, easy way to tackle the issue, but it ignores the complex fact that these are PEOPLE (Yes! like you and me) who are trying to make a better life for themselves and for their children. Indeed, the poverty and political corruption that these people choose to leave behind is a result, to an often large extent, of U.S. foreign policy toward these countries in the twentieth century. Governor Easley understands the complexity of this issue, is going against an uninformed public, and has made the right decision. He has chosen to treat them as human beings, and the tragedy is that the public does not. But, like I said, this is all above the heads of most Charlotte Observer readers, so go back to your ignorant ways. I guess I'm used to being around smart people here at UNC Chapel Hill.

How is it not illegal for a government to support and encourage acts against its very own laws? Easley has gone off the deep end and has not listened to the legal citizens of this state. All of you that support this, feel free to foot this financial bill, along with the bill to support our over flowing jails and schools. How about some more dollars for car insurance so we can continue to subsidize illegals that drive without insurance? Businesses should be punished for hiring illegals and bureaucrats like Easley should be removed from office for supporting activity that undermines our laws and only encourages more illegal behavior. How can we have any sense of "homeland" security when we openly allow illegals to function like legal immigrants and citizens? Immigration worked in the past because those that came to this country assimilated into society, we proud to be an American, learned the language and were admitted legally by our government.
