Numbers say do-nothings did a lot

Numbers say the do-nothings did a lot
Some critics of the General Assembly call the just-concluded session a do-nothing legislature. But looking strictly at the numbers, the honorables passed more stuff than in some other years.
Gerry Cohen, veteran head of the bill drafting division at the General Assembly, sent a note the other day that 409 bills were approved – 344 new laws, 68 joint resolutions, four House resolutions and three from the Senate. (Sure seems to add up to 419 to me, but what do I know?)
If the governor signs all 195 bills on his desk, that means 539 laws would have been enacted – “a potential 16 percent increase from the 463 enacted in the 2005 long session,” notes Cohen.
Here’s a link to his Web site, which has all sorts of information about the legislative process.

So we're measuring the effectiveness of the Legislature based on how many laws they passed?

If that's the case, God help us.

I'd rather measure their effectiveness by how little they raised our taxes. They'd get an A if they actually lowered our tax burden while still providing essential services and eliminating stupid expenditures.

So this Legislature really deserves an F, or a D- if you're feeling generous.

The more laws the less freedom.
So our legislature is strongly against freedom.

Better to measure how many arcane and otherwise outdated laws they take off the books.

Compare the two. HA!

yes, it's 419, not 409. My math was bad! And it turned out there were 208 bills on the Governor's desk, not 195, as one set of bill was not updated in bill status until Monday (sorry)
