Feds: N.C. colleges can admit illegals

Former Mecklenburg Sheriff Jim Pendergraph, now a federal official with the Department of Homeland Security, has advised the state of North Carolina that federal law does not prohibit illegal immigrants from attending N.C. community colleges or public universities. Writing on behalf of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the former sheriff said that admission to those facilities is not a forbidden "benefit" to undocumented immigrants if no public grants or other monetary assistance is provided, and that states may decide whether to admit them or bar them. In the absence of state policy, individual campuses may make their own rules -- but campuses that do admit students must identify "which students are illegal aliens."
Here's a link to the letter from Pendergraph, head of the Homeland Security office of state and federal relations, to the state Justice Department.
And here's a link to a letter from the Justice Department's J.B. Kelly to the N.C. Department of Community Colleges reversing an earlier advisory from the department.

Has the definition of "illegal" been changed? Why even bother using the term if they are going to be able to receive the same educational opportunities as legal immigrants?

Why educate people who can't work here legally??? They will be taking spots from citizens or people here legally.

Why do we live in a world where corporations can cross borders in search of ideal conditions, but working people cannot do the same?

The issues of immigration are not nearly as simple as people on either side of the debate would have us believe.

To liberals: Not all immigrants are saintly, salt of the earth types who only take the jobs American citizens don't want. For instance, construction jobs pay well, and plenty of Americans want them. And many immigrants commit identity theft to get those jobs. Immigrant workers don't all pay the taxes they owe, either.

To conservatives: Immigrants are just trying to make a better life. I have lived in Mexico and seen the poverty myself. I have seen parents camp out overnight to make sure their kids get a chance to go to school -- not a charter school, not a magnet school, just school. If I were them, I would walk across a desert and live in a hostile country too. And remember that immigrant workers do pay taxes, just not all they should pay -- or could, if they were here legally.

So, seriously people. Can we talk about solving the issue, rather than ranting about evil Mexicans and other nonsense?

excellent post.

What hogwash, we also pay through the nose to educate untold thousands of their children. Who pays medical bills for all the kids they have...expensive!! We have to provide transulators and foreign language forms and public tv shows. When all is said and done they are criminals here illegally!!!

It is asinine, moronic and a violation of law that illegal aliens are allowed into colleges at all. I would argue that it is in violation of the 'aiding and abetting' statute in the 1986 IRCA.

Even if illegal aliens were to pay out of state tuition, it would not cover the entire cost of their education because of capital costs, often conveniently left out (or purposely lessened) in the total costs calculations. Therefore, taxpayer subsidization of illegal aliens would occur. Also, why would any legislator allow an illegal alien to take a seat in college from a deserving American citizen or legal immigrant?

Seats in colleges are a limited and highly coveted resource, why the hell would you put an illegal alien into one?

Also, why should we be in the business of educating and training a group of people who are illegally here and cannot legally be employed?

An educated community is much better than an ignorant community, so taxes that go towards helping people move forward are worth every penny. While my counterpart Zeezil will try to paint all immigrants as pediphiles, gang bangers, and perhaps pagans, I have fpund most immigrants much more friendly and enlightened than many of the locals around here. Zeezil will probably now post a four page rant spewing venom because someboday dares to disagree with him. You can also expect these to be laced with some veiled neo-confederate comments. Please laugh politely and disregard.

Civitas Institute Decision Maker Poll Results of NC voters:

- 69% of N.C. voters oppose providing education benefits to illegal immigrants (August 2005).
- 68% of N.C. voters oppose allowing illegal immigrants to enroll in community colleges (February 2008).

Its far beyond time that the NC General Assembly abides by the will of the NC people in this matter. Attendance at any institution of higher education in NC should be reserved for citizens and LEGAL immigrants.

South Carolina and Virginia have already taken action and passed legislation denying illegal aliens attendance in colleges in their state. NC needs to follow suit.

The statements you hear from advocates for illegal aliens in favor of them having access to our colleges generally flow around their claim that better educated illegals will be more productive and will assimilate better into our society. This is not only fuzzy thinking, it is faulty logic. It’s very precept is that the illegal gets additional benefits to what they have already enjoyed by illegally remaining and operating here and gives a segment of them what they want – unfettered access to our higher education system (in addition to our primary education system that they have already utilized). This, of course, will be costly to the American taxpayer whether the illegal pays out of state tuition or not. It also deprives a deserving citizen or legal immigrant of the seat that the illegal would occupy. Another marketing campaign is that a child should not be penalized because of the ‘sins’ of their parents. Allowing access to higher education, however, allows the child to benefit from the fact their parents broke the law. Where does the rule of law fit into all of this? Actually, no where. The very act of allowing placement of an illegal alien into our colleges tears at the social fabric of our culture by favoritism to a group people who are out of compliance with our laws. These very same people would then be free to operate lawlessly living and working alongside of citizens and legal immigrants who have been required to abide by our laws. The dichotomy here is not only egregious, it is outrageous. It is anarchy.

Seats in colleges are a limited and highly coveted resource so why should we put an illegal alien into one?

Why should we be in the business of further educating and training a group of people who are illegally here and cannot legally be employed?

See? I told you he'd zigbot, or whatever his name is, would spontaniously combust and start typing away once he got detracted. I find it funny that zeeweed calls me an extremist when he's referencig the Civitas Institute, a biased organization run by John Pope, a borderline nazi windbag in his own right. The fact is, zweenie is probably threatened by the fact that more people of different languages and different colors are taking more active roles in our community and his white southern ways are finally being thrown out of the mainstream. The feds have cleared the way and North Carolina is keeping its door open to ALL of God's children, not just zipadip's cronies. Zigzag, put your zapatas on and walk with be as the brotherhood of man transcends the soverignty of nations. Perhaps your daughter will being one home for Charistmas dinner.

Danimal:
Sure, all of humanity are God's children but all of humanity doesn't belong within the United States.

Currently, there are 193 recognized sovereign countries in the world. All 193 of those countries have established immigration policies. All 193 of those countries view illegal entry into their country as a crime with sanctions and punishment for the perpetrators. Therefore, all 193 countries take the stance that illegal immigration is a violation of their national sovereignty and is not conducive to their well being. Nor is to be tolerated. The U.S. is one of those 193 countries. Should we not agree with the entire rest of the world? Yet we have liberals, extremeists, open borders golbalists, illegal alien advocates, anarchists, and chasers of cheap slave labor whining that we should not enforce OUR immigration laws.

The more we tolerate and become a nation of illegal immigrants, the deeper we fall into anarchy.

zeezil said...

As you follow Danimal’s postings you’ll notice a common theme. He has no data or statistics to support his argument of open borders, rampant globalism and benefits and all the rights of citizenship for illegal aliens so he does what all the other illegal alien advocates do…throw out the race card. Ahhhhh, yes...here we go again with the ethno-supremacists, illegal alien huggers and open borders advocates throwing out the race card. If you support enforcement of our immigration laws, expose the tremendous cost and burden of illegal immigration, and are opposed to amnesty for illegal aliens, then you are racist. That's all the side of anarchy has for an argument, folks.

Here’s a little straight talk for you, Danimal. Being opposed to illegal immigration has nothing to do with racism, bigotry or xenophobia. It has everything to do with protecting our country’s sovereignty, our right to choose who we let into our country, the safety of our citizens and legal immigrants, the protection of our culture-economy-social systems and the rule of law within our country.

Globalism is the wave of the future zeezil, so com and be a part of the big blue marble with the rest of us.

zeezil said...

Those that support globalism are those that support a destruction of all individual liberty and wealth except for the chosen bureaucrats and elitists in power. For them to succeed a destruction of the sovereignty of all countries must take place, borders erased and the people made into controlled units of labor to locate anywhere the elites desire. For their plan of New World Order to succeed, the globalists believe many people must die. I for one will fight this evil as more and more others are doing that have come to realize what is going on.

Zeezil, or should is say...Steve..., how many blogs do you post your nonsense on? My god, a google search has you spewed all over the country saying the same thing over and over.

Per one blogger describing you...

"First we have Zeezil. Zeezil is a rather prolific poster on immigration issues. He’s a member of the Americans for Legal Immigration. Zeezil’s comment’s weren’t profane and, while a little pointed and one sided, they weren’t belligerent. My problem with his comments were that they were form letters that he’s pasted into hundred’s of forums and sites across the web. They had no direct bearing on any of the points that I made. He was simply trying to use my blog as a medium for his junk. I doubt that he actually wrote the original comments that he was pasting. As I wandered through the ALI site, I was struck by the similar wording that all of the members used. My guess is that there’s one guy in the group who can put together a coherent sentence and all of the other….er… members copy his stuff. Ding…personal foul; you’re outta here.".

DUDE, have you no life? Even more important, have you no heart? I guess a couple people with darker skin and a accent really get your anxiety levels through the roof, bless your heart. That's OK, while you are fighting the world and trying to support a lost cause, I'll continue making friends of all races, ethnicities and creeds, as I will be a minority by 2050. I'm OK with that, and I'm sure many of my friends will remember how I treated them early on. I'm sure they will remember who mistreated them as well.

We'll be praying for you zeezil. One world, one love!

What exactly is your point, Danimal? That illegal immigration is perfectly fine, that we should absorb any and all illegal aliens that jump our borders and overstay their visas? That we should not exert any control over our borders, social, legal, economic, education, health care, and governmental systems? That American citizenship means nothing and whoever makes it here should be accorded all the rights of citizenship? That we should turn a blind eye to the more than $100 billion in cost that illegal aliens are causing us each year? That we should turn a blind eye to the 2,200 murders committed here by illegal aliens every year and the 4,000 Americans that lose their life to illegals driving drunk? That we should turn a blind eye to illegals driving Americans out of the work force and severely suppressing the wages of those that remain in the landscaping, construction, service and hospitality industries? That we should turn a blind eye to the 400,000 anchor babies born here by illegal aliens that are given citizenship? That we should turn a blind eye to our overflowing prisons and over burdened health care system due to the 'contributions' of illegal aliens?

Just what are you saying and what is your point, Danimal?

Anonymous said...

Well Steve,

My point on this blog is to get you riled up and keep spewing whatever talking points tha ALIPAC have told you to spew.

I personally am not threatened by the hard working people and families that want to be a part of our great nation. You can keep bringing up crime, murderm DUI's etc., but there are plenty more Anericans responsible for these same atrocities. As for amnesty, I support what Bush, McCain, and countless pro business, pro american Democrats and Republicans have proposed. I say 'welcome'.

I also support Americans becoming more active participants in the global village.

Get with the program Steve and stop being so hateful. The world is too msall for your nonsense.

zeezil said...

Oh, I see Danimal:
Your arguments are so loosely structured with nothing but raw emotion and a touchy-feely aspect to them that you cannot carry on a debate. Therefore, since you have nothing but that, you try to disparage the opposition. Sorry, that approach just doesn't work on anyone with an education and experience.

I neither am "threatened by the hard working people and families that want to be a part of our great nation", as long as they are LEGAL immigrants and have gone through the immigration vetting process. These are people who greatly contribute to our country and I welcome them whole heartily. Don't blur the clear distinction between LEGAL and ILLEGAL immigration as there is a vast difference between the two.

Since you mention ALIPAC (Americans for Legal Immigration Political Action Committee, alipac.us) you should know we are a group that supports and welcomes LEGAL immigrants to America but are opposed to ILLEGAL immigration and all the ensuing problems it entails.

You also are quite accepting of the murders, manslaughter and crimes perpetuated on Americans by illegal aliens. So answer me this, Danimal...Why should even ONE American suffer a crime OF ANY SORT at the hands of an illegal alien? With border security and zero tolerance for illegal immigration, these crimes against our citizens are essentially 100% preventable.

zeezil said...

Danimal...shall I call you Jack? The jig is up.

Anonymous said...

Stevo,

I'm against all murders and crimes no matter who commits them. It's funny how we never hear the outrage from the anti-immigrants when an American kills someone. all they want to do is scapegoat foreigners.

It's also noticable that those who yell the loudest about illegal immigration seem to be those that resist any divercity. They seem to hate non-christians (or non-protestants), gays, those of non-white races, those with long hair, and anything else that might challenge their small minds. The true intentions of you and others who post here slips out every now and then.

Again steve, this world is getting smaller and interconnectied.

Yes, illegal immigration is an issue. So is blatent racism and boorishness.

zeezil said...

Danimal/jack: Throwing out the accusatory race card again, are you? When did I ever say anything about diversity, race, gays, non-Christains, non-Protestants, long hairs...?

I'm talking about ILLEGAL ALIENS which come in all types, shapes, matters, forms, ethnicities, cultures, religions, sexual orientations and haircuts!!! Got it...ILLEGAL ALIENS, those who have illegally entered the U.S. and who continue to maintain their illegal presence through illegal activities such as illegally holding jobs through fraudlent/stolen/illegal IDs and often illegally access our public benefits systems meant for citizens in need.

Down with McClatchy rags like the Charlotte Observer!

Betts, you and that witch Bloody Mary can both go straight to hell.

So your parent company has invested heavily in the spanish media to try and save itself. Now, your job depends on continued illegal immigration and the death and destruction that comes with it for Americans.

I think it is time for Americans to give the McClatchy rags a little push over the edge financially.

That way we can watch and hope for the day these traitorous libtards are out of work.

Down with the papers!

Oh zeezil, you get so sexy when you start huffing and puffing about liberals. See you in the little boys room at the airport. Tap you foot just like that other Republican does. Oooooh, are you getting big yet?

I am fully in favor of illegals being able to attend our public colleges and universities PROVIDED they adhere to the requirement that their illegal status must be publicly disclosed. The tax payer dollars saved in simplifying the list for the ICE raids would be phenomenal. Think about it, all ICE needs to do is find the names on the list, check for home addresses and deport these criminals and their entire families! They will already have a signed legal document confessing to their criminal status. I think it is a stroke of genius.
